With a blues, gospel and rock-infused score, Montgomery puts you on the ground at the birth of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1955 Alabama, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin is arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus. Civil rights leaders want to organize a city-wide bus boycott, but they fear Claudette is too young, too poor, and too dark-skinned to be the face of the movement. When Rosa Parks, the older, disciplined NAACP secretary, is arrested 9 months later, the boycott is on. Claudette is pushed to the side, but a new court case gives her one more chance to make history.
The Writer
Britt Bonney (book, music & lyrics) is an award-winning music director and composer who recently conducted the off-Broadway premiere of A Sign of the Times. She received a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical Direction for the DC premiere of Todd Almond’s Girlfriend at Signature Theatre. She also served as the Associate Music Director for Broadway’s Sing Street and conducted the world premiere of Once Upon a One More Time at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC. Britt has frequently been commissioned to create new works for young audiences (including the American Girl LIVE tour) and received an honorable mention from the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for female composers. In addition, Britt is an accomplished copyist, having served as a music assistant to Alex Lacamoire, Alan Menken, Shaina Taub, and Kelli O’Hara. She is an alumna of the BMI Workshop and the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat and has an M.A. in vocal pedagogy from Columbia University.
