Proud Marys
Three daughters shake up the strict traditions of their religious Filipino-American family when they all get knocked up out of wedlock at the same time. Proud Marys is a seriocomedy that busts wide open the myth of the model minority Asian-American family, one pop song at a time. It’s SIX meets a Fil-Am Fiddler on the Roof.
The Writers
With a passion for hook and heart, Jennifer Paz (Book & Lyrics), along with husband-collaborator Anthony Fedorov, are on a musical quest to combine their love of pop music with authentic storytelling. Born in Manila and raised in the Seattle area, Paz enjoys writing and producing rebellious, quirky women-of-color-led stories trying to find their way, intergenerational and cross-cultural family dynamics, with themes of unspoken grief, magical realism, and humor, with the hope to heal and understand each other in our shared humanity. Paz and Fedorov are NAMT Fest alums for “Proud Marys” (Eugene O’Neill NMTC Semi-Finalist ’26, Relentless Music Award Honorable Mention ’25). Other notable accolades include 2024 APAFT Emerging Playwright Winner, 2021 Winner of Outstanding Screenplays TV Pilot Competition, and 2025 Finalist for NBC TV Writers Program. Born in Ukraine and raised in the Philadelphia and New York areas, Anthony Fedorov (Lyrics & Music) got his start performing in Russian restaurants and later made a notable mark as the “tracheotomy kid” who finished top 4 on “American Idol” (Season 4). Since then, he has found his voice as a songwriter, producer, and performer on the musical theatre stage, with credits including RENT revival (New World Stages), The Fantasticks (Off-Broadway), The 12, Joseph…Dreamcoat, (5th Avenue) and Love Actually LIVE (The Wallis). Musicals in development, include “Proud Marys” (NAMT Fest 2024, Eugene O’Neill NMTC 2026) and “4th and ‘Gol’: A Miserable Jets Fan Story” (2nd Rounder, New Art City Theatre Festival 2026). As a vocal coach, Anthony has taught at School of Rock and Point Blank Studios in Hollywood. Development History
Proud Marys began as a 1/2-hour TV-pilot and won the Outstanding Screenplays TV Pilot Competition 2021 (out of 870 submissions). It received early table readings with LA-based arts organizations Cinema Sala (Oct. 2021) and Fil-Am Arts (Feb. 2022), with support from DCA Los Angeles. Awarded a 2022/23 NAMT Frank Young Fund Writers Residency Grant with a 29-hour reading with East West Players (March 2023), Proud Marys also placed as a 2024/2025 Dramatists Guild Foundation National Fellowship Finalist and received a developmental residency at Goodspeed’s Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove (Feb. 2024).
